Well, that couldn't have gone much better for the United States.
The U.S. women's national team set an American record with 14 goals and Amy Rodriguez tied a single-game American record with five goals - all in the second half - as they throttled the Dominican Republic 14-0 in both nations' opening match at the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympics Qualification Tournament in Vancouver on Friday night.
Abby Wambach opened the scoring less than a minute in and the goals never stopped coming against a Dominican side that was clearly outclassed and overmatched in every facet of the game, only managing to possess the ball in the American half of the pitch a handful of times. Yet, the night was not a completely positive one for the U.S., as their primary goal - escape without injury - fell by the wayside when right back Ali Krieger was lost to what appeared to be a serious knee late in the first half.
With or without Krieger, the U.S. will continue their qualification campaign against Guatemala on Sunday night (Watch LIVE and FREE on UniversalSports.com at 7:30 p.m. ET). But first, we had out grades to each American player on a scale of 1-0. As you might expect in a 14-0 win, there were plenty of high grades to be had.
Hope Solo, GK -- 8
Solo got far more face time on Dancing With the Stars than she did in this match. She was never really challenged, easily corralling the few balls that bounced her way.
Amy LePeilbet, DF -- 7
Like the rest of the backline, LePeilbet had no problem turning back the few Dominican runs that came her way.
Christie Rampone, DF -- 7
See LePeilbet. It was a very uneventful day for the U.S. captain and the rest of the backline.
Rachel Buehler, DF -- 7
Buehler didn't have much to do in defense, but took advantage of the lack of Dominican attacks by crashing the box for a rare goal in the seventh minute, just the third of her international career.
Ali Krieger, DF -- 8
Krieger was perfect in her defensive tasks and did a nice job coming forward and overlapping with O'Reilly on the right wing. But, her knee injury on a high and late challenge by a Dominican defender late in the first half was precisely the one thing the Americans were hoping to avoid. The hope now is that the right back won't be sidelined long-term, but the latest report from U.S. Soccer indicates that Krieger's injury appears serious.
Shannon Boxx, MF -- 7
Another day, another steady performance for the veteran Boxx, who ensured that the U.S. dominated the time of possession.
Carli Lloyd, MF -- 7
Lloyd took a few ill-advised long-range chances that she would probably forgo in a more hotly contested match, but on the whole, her possession and distribution from her holding midfield position were on point.
Heather O'Reilly, MF -- 9
O'Reilly was probably the best player on the pitch Friday night, dancing up and down the right wing at will and with ease as she created chance after chance for the Americans.
Lauren Cheney, MF -- 8
The shift to a 4-2-3-1 formation may have benefitted nobody more than Cheney, who seems to be a perfect fit as a central attacking midfielder behind Wambach.
Tobin Heath, MF -- 8
The 23-year-old Heath was a surprise starter on the left wing over Rodriguez and Megan Rapinoe, and backed up Pia Sundhage's faith with a strong half of soccer, scoring once while showing impressive creativity and poise on the ball. She's clearly worked her way into the thick of the midfield mix.
Abby Wambach, FW -- 8
Wambach only played in the first half, but was a terror for the Dominican backline, scoring twice and dominating play inside the area. But, the artificial turf at BC Place seemed to be taking a toll on her knees, something that bears watching as the tournament goes on.
Heather Mitts, DF (42') -- 7
The veteran Mitts was pressed into duty at right back following Krieger's injury and was solid both in defense and coming forward, showing nice touch on her crosses. With Krieger's injury appearing serious, Mitts could see an expanded role over the remainder of the tournament.
Alex Morgan (46') -- 5
Morgan lacked a quality first touch this night and even in a lopsided match, struggled to get into the flow of the attack after coming on for Wambach at the half. That, combined with strong play from O'Reilly, Cheney, Heath and Rodriguez in the attacking midfield as part of Sundhage's new 4-2-3-1 formation, won't help Morgan's case to earn a starting role.
Amy Rodriguez (46') -- 9
Rodriguez scored within seconds of coming on for Heath at the half and tallied a total of five goals in the second half -- a U.S. and CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying single-game record. She made great runs both on and off the ball from a wide position and likely earned herself more minutes going forward.
