What's a little wager among race directors, right?
As the New York Giants and New England Patriots get set to square off for the Lombardi Trophy for second time in four years in Super Bowl XLVI, the race directors for two of the most prestigious marathons in the world have decided to place a friendly bet in support of their home teams.
Boston Athletic Association executive director Tom Grilk and New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg will have a running bet, if you will, on Sunday.
If the Patriots win, Wittenberg will wear a Tom Brady jersey during the 2012 B.A.A. 5K on Sunday, April 15, during Boston Marathon weekend. If the Giants prevail, Grilk will don an Eli Manning jersey during the 2012 NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K on Saturday, November 3, during ING New York City Marathon weekend.
The bet between Wittenberg and Grilk comes on the heels of the traditional wager between the governors of the respective states.
If the Giants lose Sunday's game, New York Gov. Mario Cuomo will send 46 cases of New York-made yogurt, 46 dozen bagels from Manhattan's Ess-a-Bagel and 46 cheesecakes from Junior's in Brooklyn to a Massachusetts food bank.
If the Patriots lose, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick will send 46 pies from The Pie Ladies in Centerville, 46 cases of chips made in Needham Heights and clam chowder from Boston-based Legal Seafoods to a New York local food bank.
I wonder which team Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai, who won both the Boston and New York City Marathons last year, is picking.
