China defeats Denmak in extra end for bronze

Chinese skip Wang draws into empty house for point to seal win

ESBJERG, Denmark -- China's Wang Bingyu beat Denmark's Lene Nielsen 10-9 to win bronze at the World Women's Curling Championship in Esbjerg, Denmark on Sunday morning.

The hard-fought game went all the way to an extra end after Nielsen dragged the Danes back into the game by scoring three in the eighth end to tie the game at 7-7, prompting the huge home crowd to raise their cheers.

China scored two in the ninth and then a Chinese miss in the tenth allowed Denmark back in to score the two points that put the game into an extra end.

Try as they did, the Danes could not find a way to counter China's extra end advantage in the extra end, and eventually Wang had a draw into an empty house for the one point that sealed her win.

Afterwards, a delighted Wang said, "That is really good. We lost the semi-final and we're so happy for this team to win a bronze medal."

Asked what she was thinking as she prepared for her final draw-shot for victory, she said, "I don't know about thinking too much, it makes me nervous, so I just relaxed and was thinking about the weight of the rock."

Denmark's Nielsen has been a home-crowd pleaser all week, and she said, "We can take a lot of confidence away from this event. We have just proved that we belong with the world's top teams."
